DLA Piper and XenMobile Case Study

DLA Piper secure mobile email with Citrix XenMobile & NetScaler

Law firm protects data with secure email & mobile device management

  • Secure email access from mobile devices from any location.
  • Security rules and policies secure mobile devices and data.
  • Stolen devices can be remotely wiped of the company email account and data.

The challenge

As lawyers DLA Piper live and breathe client confidentiality, and have an exceptional commitment to protecting company information.

With the expanding use of email on mobile devices, National IT Manager Philip Christopher took steps to secure the company email accounts; both in the office, and when accessed externally over the internet from any mobile device.

DLA Piper also required the ability to completely wipe the company email accounts, securely and remotely, from any hacked or stolen mobile devices. As a law firm, documents are gold and need to be completely protected.

“Our IT focus for 2013 financial year was security. We looked at products right across the board and chose Citrix because we felt it would take us further. Citrix NetScaler will allow us to add applications and virtual desktop in the future.

Because DLA Piper are one of the first companies in New Zealand to implement XenMobile, Citrix recommended we work with Deptive, as they are one of the best in the business. Having done so, we would agree with this analysis.
Phillip Christopher, National IT Manager

“Deptive are experienced Citrix product specialists, so when DLA Piper asked for recommendations around help with implementation, I knew they could meet the requirements and deliver a robust solution.”
Cliff Hedley, Field Sales Manager, New Zealand, Citrix Systems

The Citrix XenMobile solution

Deptive were commissioned to design and implement Citrix XenMobile to secure the company’s corporate owned mobile devices, and provide secure access to company email accounts from personal devices such as smartphones and tablets.

DLA Piper chose XenMobile as the basis of an integrated solution encompassing device and data management for both corporate-owned and BYO mobile devices. Deptive implemented a supporting architecture which can be expanded to deliver corporate apps and virtual desktops to those devices.

Citrix NetScaler provides secure external access to the Citrix XenMobile solution, removing the need to involve multiple vendors. DLA Piper saw value in choosing a single vendor end-to-end solution.

The ability to remotely wipe company email from any stolen device was the primary driver for DLA Piper choosing the XenMobile platform.

The in-house IT team can also create a wide variety of rules and policies to enhance email and mobile device security, including requiring PIN access, controlling which devices can access company email, Wi-Fi configuration and web content filtering.

“DLA Piper have a commitment to protect the privacy of their clientele with the most robust email security available. They have done an exceptional job of this.”
Jason Poyner, Technical Director,Deptive

DLA Piper is confident that they are employing a best-of-breed mobile device security solution and delivering the level of privacy their clients demand.

With XenMobile and NetScaler DLA Piper have a robust, reliable and flexible Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform for both company and personal devices, when connected on their internal network or via the internet.

“Deptive were approachable, easy to communicate with, and technically gifted. Their team is very knowledgeable and implemented the project in the promised timeline.
I especially liked that the technical team were willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. Perhaps the thing that has impressed me the most was the on-going support provided after the project was completed, and the regular updates Deptive send us. This includes Citrix articles and information.
This commitment to an ongoing relationship means that Deptive are contributing to growing our in house knowledge and growing our internal expertise. That’s what I like to see from a vendor, and they will be the first company I call when the next project comes up.”
Phillip Christopher, National IT Manager

What next?

Deptive are continuing to work with the DLA Piper IT team to get the most from their investment, with usage of XenMobile expected to expand the in the near future.

Future projects include a Citrix virtual desktop solution which will integrate with the Citrix components already deployed.
